Grow eggplant indoors - our best tips
Eggplant is a fantastically good and versatile vegetable. Did you also know that it becomes a sickly beautiful potted plant with its large leaves that resemble those of the fig tree? In addition to beautiful leaves and purple flowers, it produces dark purple small aubergines that form small ornaments on the plant. The eggplant requires pollination to produce a harvest, and you have to take care of that by hand when growing indoors. This is done by dabbing with a brush or with your finger from flower to flower. About 3-5 months after sowing, the beautiful houseplant will give plenty of harvest directly from your own window. It doesn't get more locally grown than that!
With us, you will find the Patio Baby mini eggplant - a smaller variety that is well suited to growing in a larger pot.

WHEN SOWING
Sow the aubergine indoors from the end of February/beginning of March (when the light has returned). Can also be sown all year round with a grow light. Sow the seed in a cultivation briquette or smaller pot with seed soil - poke 1-2 seeds approx. 0.5 cm down into the briquette/pot at approx. 0.5-1 cm intervals.
Cover the seed with transparent cover with air holes (eg, a plastic film, a recycled plastic bag or a plastic lid, provided with air holes). Tip - use a greenhouse and place a capillary mat at the bottom which provides an even and good water supply. The seeds need heat to germinate. Feel free to place on heated floors, heating mats or in a window above an element.
Water regularly with lukewarm water throughout the season - the seed should always be moist!
Give light. As soon as the seed has germinated and sprouted, usually after 15-30 days (be patient, eggplant seeds take a while!), it needs a lot of light. Remove the cover and place the pot in a bright and cooler place. Preferably in a sunny window (approx. 6 hours of sun/day) or under a plant lamp (approx. 13-15 hours of light/day).
TRANSPLANTATION
Replant when the plant has 4-6 leaves. Plant 1 plant/pot that measures approx. 10*10 cm and fill it with nutrient-rich planting soil. Plant at the same depth as the plant was previously Place on a plate or in a trough. Water through with lukewarm water.
FINAL PLANTING
Final planting approx. 3 weeks after replanting. Fill a large pot, preferably at least 10 litres, with nutritious planting soil/vegetable soil and plant the plant. Water through with lukewarm water. Put the pot in a warm place - the aubergine loves heat and will give the most and best harvest if it is allowed to stand in a sunny and protected place.
Nutrient water with liquid plant nutrients mixed in the water approx. once every two weeks, then the plant will give a richer harvest
Pollination. Help with the pollination by dabbing with e.g. the finger, a brush or a tip from the center of flower to flower.
Support with support stick.
HARVEST FESTIVAL
Harvest and enjoy. About 3-5 months after sowing, you can finally harvest your own eggplants.
CARE
The aubergine is not difficult to care for but requires plenty of water. If the plants dry out, the risk is that they will not produce a proper harvest, and it will also be less resistant to vermin. If you are going away for a week, it is a good idea to set up some type of drip irrigation, or ask a neighbor to water.
