SOWING AND HARVESTING SALAD ONIONS

Growing location : Grown outdoors/in a flowerbed or in a pallet collar in a sunny position (6-7h sun/day) - semi-shady position (3-5h sun/day).

Spring onions can be both directly sown and pre-grown.

DIRECT SOWING

Direct sow outdoors in April-June. Water the soil thoroughly before sowing. Poke the seeds about 1 cm into the soil with 3 cm between each seed and 40 cm between each row. Spring onions can also be sown in small groups of 3-5 seeds. Spring onions can also be sown in autumn in September-November for an earlier harvest the following year.

Sow in batches until mid-July. About every two weeks is enough to start a new sowing to be able to harvest continuously until the first frost nights.

Mark the sowing with markers. Specify the variety and date.

Water carefully from above so as not to wash away the seeds. Keep moist during germination.

DURING THE SEASON/OTHER TIPS

Water regularly throughout the season if it doesn't rain. It's better to water more and less often than to water a little every day.

Feel free to fertilize at some point during the season.

Clear weeds that come up between the plants.

Cupping . To get white, scaly stems, the soil can be cupped up a bit around the base of the onion. But scallions are mild in flavor, so it's also fine to ignore the cupping and eat them with the green stem.

HARVEST FESTIVAL

Harvest and enjoy about 2 months after sowing!

PRECULTIVATE

Sow indoors from March-April. Sow the seeds about 1 cm deep in growing briquettes or pots filled with seeding soil.

Mark the sowing with markers. Specify the variety and date.

Cover the seeds with a transparent cover with air holes. Tip – use a greenhouse with a plastic lid and place a capillary mat in the bottom to provide an even and good water supply. Place on a heating floor or heating mat for extra fast germination.

Water regularly - never let the seeds dry out!

1-2 WEEKS AFTER SOWING

Provide light . When the seed germinates, usually after 5-15 days, it needs light. Remove the cover and place the seed in a bright, cool place.

Topping . When the bulb has gained height, it can be cut down to about 5 cm. This will make the plants stronger.

FINAL PLANTING

Harden off the plant when the risk of frost is over, to accustom it to the outdoor environment. Start with 1 hour/day and gradually increase the time outside. Avoid direct sunlight which is too strong for the tender leaves. After a week or so it is ready for a permanent life outdoors.

Plant the bulbs in their growing location, for example in a flower bed or pallet collar, with 3 cm between each plant and 40 cm between each row. Plant in nutrient-rich potting soil.
