SOWING AND HARVESTING ROSE BEANS
Growing location : outdoors, on a pallet collar or in a larger pot in a sunny location. Can also be pre-cultivated for earlier harvest. Read further below.
OPTION: DIRECT SOWING
AT SOWING
Soak the beans overnight (maximum 24 hours). This will help them sprout faster.
Direct sow outdoors in May-June. Water the soil thoroughly before sowing.
OUTDOOR AND PALLET COLLAR
Poke beans about 2 cm into the soil with a distance of 20 cm. (Or closer but then thin when the seeds have germinated to this plant distance). Row spacing about 40 cm. Put in support stakes immediately when planting so you don't risk damaging the roots later.
POT
Hole in the bottom, about 10 liters. Fill with nutritious potting soil mixed with a little fertilizer. Place on a dish. Stick 3 bamboo sticks in a triangle at the far edges and tie them together with a string at the top. Press the soil lightly around the sticks so that they are held in place. Water the soil thoroughly before sowing. Stick 1-2 beans in at each bamboo stick at the same depth and distance as above.
Mark the sowing with markers. Specify the variety and date.
Water regularly - never let the seeds dry out!
If necessary, protect with non-woven fabric against insect pests.
DURING THE SEASON/OTHER TIPS
Support with, for example, bamboo sticks or trellis. In the beginning, you can help by tying them carefully to the support.
HARVEST FESTIVAL
Harvest as the pods ripen. The beans are harvested either flat, like string beans, or when the beans have swollen inside the pod. Then you eat the beans themselves, which are also a delicacy.
OPTION: PRE-CULTIVATE
Can also be pre-cultivated for earlier harvest, April-May.
AT SOWING
Sow in a briquette or small pot filled with potting soil. Place the briquette in lukewarm water and let it swell. Place on a dish or growing tray. Stick a bean about 2 cm into the growing briquette and cover the seed with some of the briquette's coconut fibers.
Mark the seeds with markers. Write the variety and date on the seeds to keep track of what was grown and when.
Cover the seeds with a transparent cover with air holes. Tip – use a greenhouse with a plastic lid and place a capillary mat in the bottom to provide an even and good water supply. Place on a heating floor or heating mat for extra fast germination.
Water regularly with lukewarm water throughout the season – the seeds should always be moist!
1-2 WEEKS AFTER SOWING
Provide light. As soon as the seed has germinated and emerged, usually after 5-15 days, it needs a lot of light. Remove the cover and place in a bright and cooler place.
FINAL PLANTING
Harden off when the plant is 10-20 cm tall and when the risk of frost is over, which means slowly accustoming the plant to life outdoors. Start with an hour or so each day and gradually increase the time outdoors. Avoid direct sunlight, which is too strong for the tender leaves. After a week or so, it is ready for a permanent life outdoors.
Plant the plant in its growing location, for example in the open field or on a pallet collar, with the same distance as when direct planting. Plant the entire plant, including the briquette, at the same depth as the plant was previously. Now follow the other tips given under direct sowing.
