SOWING AND HARVESTING CHILI
Growing location : Open field, greenhouse or in a larger pot outdoors in a sunny, sheltered location.
AT SOWING
Sow the chili indoors in February-March. Place the briquette in lukewarm water and let it swell. Place on a dish or growing tray. Stick a seed about 0.5 cm into the growing briquette and cover the seed with some of the briquette's coconut fibers. It can also be sown in a small pot filled with planting soil.
Mark the sowing with markers. Specify the variety and date.
Cover the seeds with a transparent cover with air holes. Tip – use a greenhouse with a plastic lid and place a capillary mat in the bottom to provide an even and good water supply. Place on a heating floor or heating mat for extra fast germination.
Water regularly - never let the seeds dry out!
2-3 WEEKS AFTER SOWING
Provide light . When the seed germinates, usually after 15-25 days, it needs light. Remove the plastic and place the seed in a brighter and cooler place.
TRANSPLANTATION
Replant several times to gradually get a larger pot and more soil. If you replant the plants into a pot that is too large right away, the plant will focus on developing the roots instead of focusing on growth. Also, the roots can rot if they get too wet with too much soil. Plant the chili at the same depth as the plant was previously.
TRANSPLANTATION 1
Replant in a pot, approximately 7x7cm, when the plant has two pairs of leaves.
TRANSPLANTATION 2
Replant in a pot, about 10x10-15x15cm, about 2-3 weeks after transplanting 1.
FINAL PLANTING
Replant in a pot, about 15x15-30x30 cm, about 2-3 weeks after transplanting 2. If you want your chili plant outdoors, it needs to be hardened off to gradually get used to life outdoors. Start with 1 hour/day and gradually increase the time outside. Avoid direct sunlight, which is too strong for the tender leaves. After a week or so, it is ready for a permanent life outdoors.
TIP!
- If the seed capsule gets stuck on the first leaves, drip a little water on it a few times until it softens a little and you can peel it off by gently squeezing the seed capsule.
- Feed with liquid plant nutrients several times during the season. Buy liquid plant nutrients that you dilute in water or make your own with pelleted chicken manure or nettles.
-
Promote pollination by dabbing your finger from the center of the flower to the next flower. You can also do this by shaking the flowers a little. More help is needed in a greenhouse than outdoors.
- Support with support stick.
- Aphids. Chili can be affected by aphids. Mix 2 tablespoons of soap in 1 liter of water in a spray bottle. Spray the entire plant thoroughly, including the soil surface and the underside of the leaves. Avoid placing the plant in sunlight as long as it is moist, or spray in the evening. Repeat one or more times at approximately 1 week intervals.
- Ventilate. If you grow in a greenhouse, make sure to ventilate properly on really hot days.
