SOWING AND HARVESTING BEAN
Growing location : outdoors, pallet collar or pot in a sunny position.
Can also be pre-cultivated for earlier harvest. Read further below.
OPTION: DIRECT SOWING
AT SOWING
Soak the beans overnight (maximum 24 hours). This will help them sprout faster.
Direct sow outdoors in MAY-JUNE. For a longer harvest period: Sow in batches. Water the soil thoroughly before sowing. Broad beans can be sown early in the spring as they tolerate cold soil better than other beans and the plant can withstand light frost.
OUTDOOR, PALLET COLLAR, LARGE POT
Water the growing area thoroughly.
Stick beans about 3-5 cm into the soil with a distance of 10-20 cm. Row spacing about 40-50 cm. It is possible to plant closer row spacing than recommended: 15-20 cm may be enough. This will also support the plants. Put in support stakes immediately when planting so you don't risk damaging the roots later.
Mark the sowing with markers. Specify the variety and date.
Water regularly, about 2-3 times a week. Never let the seeds dry out!
If necessary, protect with non-woven fabric against insect pests.
DURING THE SEASON/OTHER TIPS
Cup the soil around the plant when it is 10 cm tall. (MOVE THIS INFO HERE?)
Support with, for example, bamboo sticks or a trellis. When they are about 20 cm high, you can start tying them carefully to the support. Continue tying them up as they grow.
Fertilize the plants at least once during the season. They are particularly demanding in the beginning, but once they have grown, the need for nutrients decreases as they fix nitrogen from the air.
Aphids sometimes attack broad beans, especially at the top. If this happens, cut off the top and throw it away.
HARVEST FESTIVAL
Harvest and enjoy. After about 4-5 months you can finally harvest lovely beans, when the pods look full and thick.
OPTION: PRE-CULTIVATE
Can also be pre-cultivated for earlier harvest. APRIL-MAY Indoors, broad beans grow quickly and become tall and lanky, so make sure they get plenty of light, adequate heat and it is often enough to sow them two to three weeks before the estimated planting date.
AT SOWING
Soak the beans overnight (maximum 24 hours). This will help them sprout faster.
Sow in a pot with potting soil. Poke the seed down about 3-5 cm and cover with soil.
Mark the seeds with markers. Write the variety and date on the seeds to keep track of what was grown and when.
Water the seeds so that they are moist, from above or below.
Cover the seeds with a transparent cover with air holes. Tip – use a greenhouse with a plastic lid and place a capillary mat in the bottom to provide an even and good water supply. Place on a heating floor or heating mat for extra fast germination.
Water regularly with lukewarm water until they are ready to be planted out, about 1-3 times per week.
1-2 WEEKS AFTER SOWING
Provide light. As soon as the seed has germinated and emerged, usually after about 5-15 days, it needs a lot of light. Remove the cover and place in a bright and cooler place. Preferably in a sunny window (about 6 hours of sun/day).
FINAL PLANTING
Harden off when the plant is 10-20 cm tall and when the risk of frost is over, which means slowly accustoming the plant to life outdoors . Start with an hour or so each day and gradually increase the time outdoors. Avoid direct sunlight, which is too strong for the tender leaves. After a week or so, it is ready for a permanent life outdoors. MAY-JUNE is usually a good time to transplant.
Plant the plant in its growing location, for example in the open field, in a pallet collar or in a pot at the same distance as when direct planting. Plant the entire plant at the same depth as the plant was previously. Now follow the other tips given under direct sowing.
