How to grow rose hips – our best tips!

The rose has to be one of the most classic and beloved summer flowers. And it's easy to understand why – you'd be hard-pressed to find a more grateful flower that comes in such a wide variety of colors and shapes. I have to say that I was previously skeptical of the rose – I thought it was a bit boring – but I've completely reevaluated that when I realized how many fantastic varieties there are and how extremely worth growing it is. In our range you will find the most lovely varieties, see all the rose varieties here .

Firstly, it is a breeze to grow from seed. It does not require any fancy treatment, but is simply poked into a growing briquette or pot with soil and germinates within a week or so. If you find it difficult to grow indoors, it can also be cold-sown outdoors. Plant your seeds in soil in a pot, grape crate, candy box with holes in it and moisten the seeds with water or snow. Then keep an eye on it to make sure it does not dry out, especially in early spring when the sun is shining. At exactly the right time, the seed will hatch and a small shoot will emerge. If you grow this way, you will also avoid hardening off, as the plant is already adapted to life outdoors.

The rose bush grows quickly and should be topped when it is about 15 cm. This means you cut off the top of the flower, at the second or third pair of leaves, so that it can branch out and become a bushier and more abundantly flowering plant. The rose bush grows tall and large and fills the flowerbed with lively and lush greenery. It blooms very gratefully from mid-summer and well into late autumn. It can also withstand some cold snaps – I picked my last bouquets at the end of October in Enskede this year. The rose bush can be grown both in direct sun and in partial shade.

Rose-red Rubenza

It is NOT easy to choose a favorite. Is it the large single-flowered ones or the ones with lobed leaves that look like fluttering tulle skirts? Is it the classic white ones or the new varieties in apricot pink? Or maybe the ones in dark cerise? Luckily you don't have to choose and can grow them all 😊 . With us you will find three darlings that we grow year after year. As beautiful in the flowerbed as in the bouquet.

Apricot daisies – the most hyped daisies right now and I agree. It is incredibly beautiful with its changing color scheme that ties together bouquets of flowers in different tones.

Rosenskära Rubenz a . So this color is to die for. We firmly believe in more color and drama in our gardens and bouquets and then the rubenz has a given place.

Rose-red Fizzy White . It's just too pretty. Like a fluttering tulle skirt floating on wispy stems.

SOWING AND HARVESTING ROSE CUTTERS

Growing location: Grown outdoors/in a flowerbed or in a pallet collar in a sunny position (6-7h sun/day) - semi-shady position (3-5h sun/day).

AT SOWING

Sow the rose bush indoors in March-May depending on how early you want it to bloom. Place the briquette in lukewarm water and let it swell. Place on a dish or growing tray. Stick a seed about 0.5 cm into the growing briquette and cover the seed with some of the briquette's coconut fibers. You can sow about 3 seeds in each briquette.

Mark the sowing with markers. Specify the variety and date.

Cover the seeds with a transparent cover with air holes. Tip – use a greenhouse with a plastic lid and place a capillary mat in the bottom to provide an even and good water supply. Place on a heating floor or heating mat for extra fast germination.

Water regularly - never let the seeds dry out!

1-2 WEEKS AFTER SOWING

Provide light . When the seed germinates, usually after 5-15 days, it needs light. Remove the cover and place the seed in a bright, cool place.

RETRAINING

Replant the plant when it has 4 leaves, to give it more space. Carefully divide the briquette into two parts with 1-2 plants per part. Water before dividing to reduce the risk of damaging the tender roots. Plant each part in a pot measuring approximately 7x7 cm, which is filled with nutritious potting soil. Plant at the same depth as the plant was previously. Water with lukewarm water. Here the plants are then allowed to grow before it is time to transplant. If the plant's growth has stopped, replanting can be done when it has 2 leaves.

Topping the plant when it is about 10-15 cm, i.e. cutting off the top just above the second or third pair of leaves to encourage new shoots to grow. This will give you a bushier and larger plant.

FINAL PLANTING

Harden off the plant when the risk of frost is over, to accustom it to the outdoor environment. Start with 1 hour/day and gradually increase the time outside. Avoid direct sunlight which is too strong for the tender leaves. After a week or so it is ready for a permanent life outdoors.

Plant the plant in its growing location, for example in a flower bed or pallet collar, with 30 cm between each plant and 30 cm between each row. Plant in regular potting soil. If the rose gets too much nutrition, the plant will become large and bushy and flowering will be delayed. Make sure to support the flower with a support stick so that it can reach its full potential. Water continuously throughout the season.

HARVEST FESTIVAL

Harvest and enjoy about 4 months after sowing and you can then enjoy luxuriant bouquets right up until the first frost. A good summer flower to invest in for those who live in northern latitudes that get early night frosts.
