Plant an onion lasagna in a pot - our best tips
Growing flower bulbs in a pot is both simple and very beautiful! By growing according to the onion lasagna method, where bulbs with different flowering times are planted in different layers, you get to enjoy flowering for a long time. Since you plant in a pot, you don't even need a garden, a balcony or patio is enough to grow this. Plant the bulbs more densely than you do in open ground - then they will support each other when they grow up and you will get maximum results. Here are our best tips for how to succeed!
- Select a number of different flower bulbs with different flowering times that together create beautiful combinations. Don't skimp on onions!
- Choose a larger outdoor pot with holes in the bottom.
- Bottom the pot with play balls, it facilitates drainage and reduces the risk of the bulbs rotting.
- Fill the pot with a layer of nutrient-rich potting soil, sprinkle on some bone meal and then plant the largest bulbs with a late flowering period at the bottom - for example tulips and daffodils. Always make sure to place the pointed top of the onion upwards.
- Fill with soil so that the bulbs are just covered. Sprinkle on some bone meal and then plant the next layer of bulbs with a slightly earlier flowering time - for example pearl hyacinth and lily of the valley.
- Fill with another layer of soil, sprinkle on some bone meal and plant the last layer of bulbs with the earliest flowering time - for example, crocus. Finish by adding a layer of soil that is about 3 times as deep as the height of the bulbs.
- Water the onion lasagna carefully so that the soil is not completely dry.
- Place the pot for the winter in a cool place, e.g. in a garage, basement or in a protected place under a roof or eaves outdoors. It should ideally not be warmer than five degrees, then the bulbs may wake up too early.
- Bulb plants are generally hardy, but in a severe winter the pot may need to be insulated if it is stored outdoors, sweep it e.g. with a thick fiber cloth.
- In February, you can start to water it carefully and add some snow that will slowly melt. When the spring sun begins to peek out, you place the pot brightly and wait for the floral fireworks to take off.
- When the flowering is underway, you can feel the soil from time to time - if it is completely dry, you can turn on a little water.
- When the flowering is over, you can leave the bulbs and wither completely. Then the onion will store energy for the next season. In the autumn, you can crowd the soil with bone meal so that the bulbs get extra energy for the next season. You can also replant the bulbs in another plant location if you want to plant new beautiful combinations in the pot next spring.
