Growing leafy houseplants - our best tips
Why you should grow a leafy houseplant – beautiful, fragrant and easy to grow
Leafy houseplant is a fantastic cut flower that is perfect for our Swedish climate. It is not only beautiful – it is also hardy, easy to grow and blooms early in the season when most other things are still in full swing.
What makes the leaf hut so special?
The leafy houseplant has many strings to its lyre. Here are some of the reasons why it has an obvious place in our cut flower gardens.
-
Cold-tolerant: The leafy houseplant can withstand low temperatures and is therefore perfect for growing in our northern latitudes. We usually plant it out in May and it often offers the very first bloom in our grow boxes.
-
Smells lovely: It has a sweet, strong scent that is really noticeable. It creates just as much pleasure out in the flowerbed as when you pick it in a bouquet. Make sure to plant it near places where you spend a lot of time to really maximize the enjoyment of the scent and beauty.
-
Looks great in a vase: Thanks to its sturdy stems, it looks great in a vase for up to 10 days, especially if you trim the stems.
-
Lifts every bouquet: It is a bit like a snapdragon in shape but gives a more luxurious impression. By sticking a leaf hut into your bouquet, you really add that little extra that gives the feeling of a florist's bouquet.
-
Available in many colors: We especially love the ones in pastel tones like lavender blue, apricot, and light yellow.
How to grow leafy houseplants
- Pre-cultivate indoors : Sow the seeds shallowly in small pots with potting soil. They usually germinate within a week.
- Keep them cool when they have emerged : This will make the plants compact and strong.
- Plant out in May : The foliage houseplant can withstand some cold and can be planted out earlier than many other summer flowers.
- Choose a sunny location : This will give you more abundant flowering.
- Sow in batches. Each seed only produces one flower, so we usually sow the leaf hut in batches during the season to extend the flowering period.
